This is a new view for me. I can't remember what looks like houses to the right. You can just see white steps and ground in front.

VB don't remember houses being there but in that vicinity there was a building and, if I remember rightly, it was called The Common Lodging House.

It looks like the view from Station Rd as the shops on the left used to curve around to the Hirshoe on the corner. Looking back under the bridge on the right is where Woodcock House is now. Ultimately Fosters motorcycle shop would be on the right in front of the bridge. I lived in Woodcock House, 10th floor looking over the Duggies and the bridge from around 1965 until 1973 and can clearly remember the demolition of the bridge.

Just do not remember a building there Derek B it has got me flummoxed. I know there was a lodging house on the other side further up. Another lodging house further up on the right slightly up brew towards Chapel Lane.

"FLUMMOXED", they probably have a pill for that these days Vb.

GW I can only think you must be quite a bit younger than me if you haven't heard that word! (I remember my dad saying it sometimes) lol

Comment by: Albert. on 17th March 2016 at 20:53

GW Flummox is in the English dictionary. Definition of the word, confuse.

Comment by: GW. on 18th March 2016 at 04:20

Your right thanks Albert. Turns out i'v been 'flummoxed' all these years!

Comment by: Vb on 18th March 2016 at 12:00

I am in a permanent state of flummox GW I would gladly take tablets for it! If there were any!

Taking a walk down Memory Lane' Wigan World sometimes helps Vb.

Comment by: p foster on 24th March 2016 at 21:01

dint palentines pop used to be on the left and the horse shoe pub on the corner

Comment by: roy sturgeon on 31st March 2016 at 20:12

just through bridge on right hand side was tommy hannons second hand shop got fooded out when dougie over flowed

Easy!!! To right of pic, this side of the bridge is now Douglas House. Behind the bridge is still the River Douglas. Behind that is Woodcock House. This is now a small decent following crossing the 'new road', over the Douglas, then 'up Scholes'.

Comment by: Vb on 31st March 2016 at 22:46

I remember Hannons but I thought the building was out of the picture past the nearest vehicle.

The first shop on the left of the picture is Bradshaw's Newsagents and driving school. I used to take the papers for them in the 60's. Annie Clarke was their shop assistant for years. Good days them !!
