They were just great, I loved them and their music.
When I was a schoolgirl at Hindley and Abram Grammar School, I had a penfriend in America who told me all about this new group they had to rival The Beatles! They were called The Monkees, and one of them was English. I told all my schoolfriends about this and THEY DIDN'T BELIEVE ME!
The Monkees were manufactured to rival and ape the antics of the Beatles in their two films Hards Days Night and Help! At first none could play any instruments and session men played on the first tunes!
They learnt fast and became the darlings of the USA! Having Jones a Brit in the line up helped!
Davy Jones was a former apprentice jockey at Basil Foster's Holland House Stables in Newmarket.
Davy rode his first winner at Lingfield in 1996 on a horse called Digpast - the race can be seen on YouTube.
He also cared for Basil Foster's needs during his former guvnor's later years.
Well Done, Davy!
Has this group anything to do with Wigan?
Thanks Philip for that additional info which I didnt know!
You must be retired now like me.
Michael Nesmith was a competent guitarist when he joined the Monkees, and Peter Tork was a multi-instrumentalist. Nesmith went on to have a two country number ones in the USA: 'Silver Moon' and 'Joanne'.
I think the clue is in the words'A Wigan Observer'...,
Monkees on youtube. Daydream believer, brilliant.
Micky Dolenz was originally in Circus Boy and Mike Nesmith`s mum invented Tippex (apparently )
mike, think the connection with Wigan is the fact the Monkee Special and the Latics supplment were printed in Wigan, in full colour, which at the time was the latest technology for printing, and Wigan was one of the first newspaper offices in England to change from letterpress printing to lithography. Also notice on the Latics supplement image of Alan Rimmer, who reported on the Latics for years, good chap. Regards to all.
