Super Duper. Any idea if the Flying Scotsman will be passing through any time soon Mick ?

Comment by: John on 9th January 2016 at 15:49

John, The Flying Scotsman should be coming through Wigan on Sat 23rd January. It has had to be re-routed from Manchester as the Bolton-Manchester line is closed that weekend for further work on Farnworth tunnel.

as you probably know mick.you would not have seen a great western going through Wigan in the heyday of trainspotting in the 50s.,I think the nearest place would have been chester

Mick, I did send in those two comments, just as they appear above.

Sorry John, my very similar comment must have been lost in the ehter! Suffice to say things could change!

These were called Castles.

Comment by: Mick on 10th January 2016 at 17:03

Oh dear Garry is off again!!!

Comment by: Jarvo on 10th January 2016 at 21:44

Ha, ha, ha...Garry, it's becoming far too deliberate now...Castles indeed...However, getting back to the photograph, I did see the King's return later that evening. And what an impressive return it was. I would rate this engine a close second to the Coronation class. Great photograph. Well done, Mick.

The photo is King Edward I and I photographed it also at Warrington Bank Quay. My wife was with me and not impressed with it as it is a very noisy 4 cylinder loco at speed. It is also very powerful. I remember seeing several ex GWR locos going to Wigan including Patshull Hall and Warfield Hall, back in the 60's

Hi Mick. I found out this information regarding the Flying Scotsman that might interest you, and others. A link to the website of the Railway touring Co: http://www.railwaytouring.net/uk-day-trips/winter-cumbrian-mountain-express-23-01-16

Just to clarify George's final point. The two Halls were cut up at Thompsons/Central Wagon Works at Ince in the middle of 1964.About 20 other ex GWR locos, mainly Pannier Tanks met their fate here.In total over 300 locos were scrapped at Ince.Owdbill.
