Is that the pit that was known as Jemmy Lavin's deyeye?

Comment by: Eddie. on 22nd November 2015 at 17:52

I assume that it was tuddy, since it was a ' dey hey ' and it was owned by Jimmy Lavin initially, then latterly by several of his brothers. Lawrence Lavin being the most predominant and one of the longest lived of the family. Although Reg Lavin, one of the nicest members of the family in my opinion, and the last of the brothers, is still with us. ( 22.11.15. )

Thanks for that Eddie, I can remember being down Golborne Colliery in the 1970s and working in a district that was in a bad condition, one bloke uesed to describe it as "being worse than Jemmy Lavin's dey hey.

I'm just about old enough, L12 haulage was my first job at Golborne when I was sixteen. Dose anybody know how long Lavin's was worked for?

When I started in 72, L10 had just finished and they were driving the face heading for L12. Sorry Tuddy, I don't know much about Lavins apart from roughly where it was.

My grandfather - Thomas Webster - worked for the Lavins at Arch Lane for 15 years, not sure of the years. He worked for Garswood Coal & Iron Co for 45 years. I do remember being at Our Lady's school with Maureen Lavin in 1955 & sending her a Valentine card in 1955.
