This is from the bank book I mentioned in my 20th Dec.`14 comment of Ted Porter`s Christmas Postal Order 1960 in Walmsleys section.
The first entry of five shillings was on 2nd Oct.1944. This book was full on 28th March 1961 and the amount of £629-16-8 was transferred to a new book.
The interest rate in the Ordinary Department in 1944 was 2.5 per cent.
Col.J.S.A. Walker, T.D., J.P. was Vice Chairman of the Trustees and Committee of Management of Wigan Trustee Savings Bank.

I too had a savings book but mine was started when I was a baby in 1948. I used to be given savings stamps with the pictures of Prince Charles and Princess Anne and then when I had reached £1 it was added to my book somehow at school. I can't remember the denominations, one may have been 6d. but I know someone will help me out with their memories.I have a lifetime of savings nous from this small beginning, I have tried to pass on to my family the ideals of thrift but I feel sorry for so many when they get saddled with debt.
