Photographed from a Manchester to Southport DMU service back in Summer 1986.
I have many fond memories of this station from the sixties, walking down Gathurst Lane after yet another detention at John Rigby. Lovely little waiting-room with a nice warm fire - or is the fire just a figment of my nostalgic imagination?
Is the station still there and working, ie ticket office? Great shot Baldylocks.
Station still thankfully in operation and the waiting room etc is now Gathurst Station Inn and a good place to visit (see its facebook page)
This looks more like Appley Bridge station.
It brought back memories for me as well. As a small child, waiting for the train to Southport and my Dad, on seeing the approaching train, taking my hand and pulling me back, telling me not to get too close.
I also remember walking back home through the fields in the pitch darkness and feeling safe because my Dad was holding my hand.
Another memory is being with our local 'gang' and falling head first and tumbling top to bottom of the embankment , catching all the brambles on the way down !
Baldy locks , Photos such as yours are invaluable. The modern world is moving faster than ever, it is so easy to feel somehow left behind in an ever progressive world. A simple photo but holding huge value, thank you.
Gathurst station Max, definitely not Appley Bridge. The buildings are similar because they are 19th century railway architecture, but the surroundings are completely different.
The stone bridge leading from the station to Ackhurst Lane can be seen in the distance. There is no similar bridge at Appley Bridge station.
Garry ,Polly glad you like the photos, some of which were just taken to use up the film on the roll ends of family holiday snaps ect.
These days i now photograph & record as much as i can.
We are indeed in a rapidly changing world.
Thanks Mick, good info.
Well said Polly. Thanks to Baldylocks.
The land to the left of the station, now used by horses, is where the original Roburite and Amonal factory stood before it moved accross the Douglas valley until it's closure.
I wondered why that field behind the station had remnants of old bricks & masonary rubble in it here & there Gordon.
