The right side of the Wigan Observer's printing press, the complicated intricates of gears and main drives. The very dangerous and noisy machine shows various parts. The press printed well over 100 million copies in the cellar at Rowbottom Square. The machine men had to continually walk-round with an oil can to lubricate it's very many fast moving parts. The machine printed its last copie at the end of January 1966. The press was built in Liverpool in 1869, for the Liverpool Daily Post, but from 1884-1966 she kept on rolling until printing the last broadsheet Wigan Observer, number 13,333. She now shows-off her well engineered parts at the London Science Museum.

what steam engine is it?

The machine was first powered by a Gas engine, then in the early 1900s, electric motor.

That is one massive gearbox arrangment, very complicated indeed.
