In the 1970's as a young trainspotter, I would cycle across Wigan on Sundays with some mates and call at the Springs Branch office. Sometimes the boss there would allow us to wander around the sheds admiring the trains and recording numbers. Imagine that happening these days! This photo brings back those memories. Thanks.

So who carries out the maintenance on the railways today and where?

Garry,
DBS Who are the current residents of Springs Branch have a major depot/workshop at Toton near Nottingham.Wigan TMD is used for wagon repairs and as a operational and maintenance base for Network Rail multi-purpose vehicles (MPV'S)
It is also the base for one of the three remaining breakdown cranes left in the U.K.

It must have been breakfast time. I would be off to kwik save in the van or over the wall to Jenny's for a toast topper. Happy days!
