No1 pit near the canal. This was the first pit. along with No2 to be sunk at Plank Lane in 1872 by Ackers Whitley Co Ltd.
In 1877 sinking was started at two more shafts, No3 and No4 pits. In the early years of the 20th Century No5 pit was sunk.
These pits were known as Plank Lane Colliery. The name was changed later to Bickershaw Coll.

No 1 Pit at Bickershaw, this engine which was electric and was the hardest of the three to control as there was no balance rope attached to the pit cages.
