This is the ramp we used to back lorries up to load the barges to take coal to Westwood power station Wigan in 1964
it used to take all day one after another and quite a few
lorries as well good old days eh

Here's some good info about when the last coal barges used the ramp.

'The National Coal Board used the canal until 1970. In November of that year 6000 tons of coal were moved in 110 barges over a period of 18 days. From 1971 the transportation of coal was done by road. '
