Comment by: RON HUNT on 6th January 2014 at 19:25

At this time the car showrooms would have been Gordon Fords. I got my BRAND NEW Ford Cortina 1600 GT car from there Yellow with a black vinyl top. It was one of the first cars to have the high back seats. Cost £1300. Can't remember the exact year but was early 1970's I got marrried in 1974 and I already had the car then

Thank you Ron..I was brought up in Great George Street and to see these shops again brings back so many memories.

Comment by: RON HUNT on 7th January 2014 at 08:31

Maureen, if you look on ALBUM. PLACES. WALLGTE there are some more photographs showing this part of Wallgate.

Comment by: A.W. on 7th January 2014 at 09:45

Wallgate was a great little community in those days.

Comment by: Albert on 7th January 2014 at 10:35

In the late fifties, and early sixties, controlled the traffic on Wallgate, with it's junction with Miry Lane, on many occasion, about 5p.m., so the factory girls' from Eckersleys, and Trencherfield, could get safely across the road. Very heavy traffic then. Everything travelling north, came through Wigan. Motorways were still being constructed, or, on the drawing board.

bipper, the pub was called the Star, and the Old Star next one up

Great photos these, memories of an unforgetable era in a lot of our lives. Maureen! I presume it's Maureen A(nee McG)yes? It,s through your mention of Gt George St that i thought, that's Ms sister.

Comment by: Roy on 7th January 2014 at 15:50

Comment by: Maureen on 7th January 2014 at 18:37

Comment by: Roy on 7th January 2014 at 20:11

Hi Maureen, i am Mikes mate from TLS, we've spoken before, i didnt want to post your details just in case you didn;t want them seen, i did them in a way you would recognise them if it were you and no one else would, i was just trying to establish that it WAS you, why the change of name or is that a private matter? Nice to know you're still posting anyway. Apologies to Ron for turning this into a message board.

Comment by: Maureen on 7th January 2014 at 20:58

Just a little note Roy..I can't see where I changed my name.

Comment by: Roy on 7th January 2014 at 23:55

Maureen, did you not used to sign as Maureen Andrews(nee McGovern)?

Comment by: Maureen on 8th January 2014 at 08:32

Yes Roy you're right, but it is a bit of a mouthful..and seeing that no one else puts their maiden name on as well as married name I decided to drop it and just use my Christian name..

Comment by: Roy on 8th January 2014 at 11:30

Comment by: Joe Thomas on 8th January 2014 at 13:51

Comment by: Bill Eatock on 8th January 2014 at 16:21

Thanks for that, Joe. I only later spotted that the destination board showed 'via Wigan'

In the 60's the Ford garage was William's of Wigan. I worked for Latimers in Market Street as a driver, we had two vans which we parked up each night at an open garage probably once their petrol station right opposite Near to the old canal warehouse.

Comment by: Nev on 9th January 2014 at 19:36

The left hand shop was Malley's shoe shop. They were also clog specialists, you can just make out the word 'clog' at the top of the right hand window.

Comment by: Maureen on 9th January 2014 at 21:19

One of our teachers at St Josephs School was married to Mr Malley's Son..and next door to Malley's shop going down was Nelsons sweet shop.
