unusual to see tank engines on freight services.from the white painted front number plate I would say mid sixties.she was withdrawn from lostock hall in may 1967.
another great pic ron, kepp em coming.
Why is that baker boy?
tank engines where designed for local passenger services, due to their size they had a small coal capacity and water tanks.
some of the freight services where long distance.therefore nearly always where rostered to tender locos.however that wasnt to say the tanks where not strong quick engines.
A Fairburn 2-6-4T on a 'local', NOT a long distance freight. Lovely engine.
Tank engines are ideal in reverse as going forward, designed for branch line passenger service or light goods.
Plenty coal and water tanks up and down the tracks then. Tank engines could do any job..baker boy. Infact, because they were a tank, more weight was put on the driving wheels, less slip.
They might not hold as much coal, but certanly more water.
Tank Eingine where used to shunt carrages as well as fright wagons at wigan station look at the front of the engine it as one lamp . This Looks like wigan shunt engine getting fright ready for departure , goods where sent to wigan station for local destinations a good yard was across from wigan station the 3 wheel scamal was based there
42297 appears to be shunting North Western Sidings, the stubs of which are still visible at the far end of the new car park. This engine went new to 25F Low Moor in December 1947 with it's LMS number 2297 before being transferred to 27D Wigan L & Y shed prior to September 1950. It stayed at Wigan until April 1964 when it was transferred to 9H Patricroft staying there until March 1965 when it was further transferred to Lostck Hall from where it was withdrawn in May 1967.
