Stanier's masterpiece: the black five. This fine locomotive survived right up until the last days of steam in August, 1968. Thank God some of these engines were preserved.

why we're they called black 5s

they where painted lnwr black and they where lms classification 5 in the power ratings for steam locos.

BB: Incorrect. The LMS was plain black up until nationalisation in 1948. Then they became BR lined black. They were NEVER LNWR engines...Get your facts right, laddo. :)
