Sorry to correct you: the above loco is The Lanarkshire Yeomanry, one of only two named black fives; the other being Ayrshire Yeomanry.
I stand corrected: Lanarkshire Yeomanry was one of four named Black Fives; the others being: 45156 Ayrshire Yeomanry; 45157 The Glasgow Highlander; and 45158 Glasgow Yeomanry...The original Lanarkshire Yeomanry was numbered 45154...45254 was not named up to and including the summer of 1966...Is the above a loco named after preservation?
John, Should have gone to Specsavers<g> the photo was taken during the RCTS rail tour 24th September 1966
Makes sense: you did not often see them so shiny and gleaming in the sixties.
Ron, my Ian Allan Combined Volume is a copy of the winter 1961 original...45254 was unnamed in it...Mmmm, I think the above loco must have been in private hands by 1966, hence the new name.
Don't know who owned it or what it was called but it's a beautiful piece of engineering. Perhaps I'm looking through rose-tinted specs but nothing can compare to the 'golden age' of steam!
Jarvo: Loco database shows 45254 not in private hands, in 1966. Allocated to Newton Heath, until condemned, and withdrawn in 1968. No mention of name, however.
Same source shows 45154 withdrawn in 1966.
Although not usual, it is also not unknown for names to be transferred to another unit.
the loco is/was 45154 withdrawn nov 1966 from speke junction mpd and sadly cut up at drapers scrapyard hull end of may 1967
BB: The engine above is clearly 45254, not 45154...The mystery deepens...
jarvo 46254 was around until mid 1968, I did go to specsavers and it looks like 45154
I can't make it out clearly. Maybe Ron put the wrong number down; that would explain everything, wouldn't it? Anyone else think it's 45254?
Problem solved. Just looked at a bigger size photo and yes it is 45154 It appears the original text with the photo was wrong.
Thanks, Ron...Now WHEN do I get to be recalled to WW? Answer, please...And maybe you can tell us all who is the boss now...Yes?
Ian Riley owns black five 45407 based in Bury, Lancs. at The East lancashire Railway. He named it The Lacashire Fusiler after the Regiment which is based in Bury, the engine is in main line use and can be seen all over the country.
Actually there were five not four named black fives
