One of only two of the class with smoke deflectors; the other being Phoenix. Lovely loco that was a regular visitor to Wigan. Happy days.
What is the tower at the back of the engine?
pw its probably a parcels lift shaft
Nine times out of ten you would find one at Springs Branch on a Sunday morning, 1964-1966.
I think the tower in the background is the old "Fish lift" fish trains would arrive on a daily basis from Fleetwood and off load at Wigan (as well as elsewhere), theses would be take down in the lift by the dedicated Fish Porter (Mr Batersby) who would sort the fish out for distribution to the various fishmongers, i think you could also access the station from Queens St, there used to be a booking office there, but it was only open on Bank holidays to relieve congestion from the main booking office, which would be full of holiday makers.
JJF, I ssemto remember one time when Wigan returned by train from winning the cup at Wembley, the team left the station via Queen Street to get on the coach for the parade through the town.
