Found this info. whilst surfing the net. I'm sure it will prove very interesting for any family members. Must admit I have never heard of this memorial. Does anyone know where it is now?

Hopefully in rescuing safe hands. It seems that they were loco shed staff. It is a valuable image for family history members. About time Ebay stopped handling this sort of thing, they have no place being passed around in monetary transactions. They belong to the communities they originate from, regardless of it starting the journey as legitimate 'dismantling salvage' or opportunity individual walking off site with it. Hopefully, the right person is caring for it and it has not ended as scrap value.
These things have no place on auction sites, in my opinion.

Reply from Carol Liptrot who does work for the War Graves Committee.
Yes, I am aware of this as I came across it a few years ago. It had been offered for sale
on Ebay and was purchased by a member of the Great War society in order to preserve it
for public viewing. I did research the names, as did the buyer, who does not live in Wigan,
and evidence suggests that all worked as engine cleaners and the like at, most likely, the
Prescott Street Sidings Engine Sheds Depot. I have an article somewhere about it as there
was a report in the local paper where Councillor John Hilton, who used to work on the railways,
had been told about it by someone and was banging on about getting it back for Wigan. Well,
it was not his to decide that. The person who bought it is obviously an honourable man and it
it is eventually his intention to offer it to the L & Y Railway Museum to be preserved for the
future and it can be displayed for public viewing.
