Not nit picking Ron,but officially it is in the sectional appendix as Upholland Tunnel.

It is 959 yards long Ron.

What is significance of the white diamond shape attached to signal mast?

The white diamond indicates that the line section is protected by track circuits which detect the presence of a train, usually connected to the signals to prevent a signalman from accidentally signalling another train on to the occupied track.

Interesting photograph. The black five has its numberplate missing. Could have been taken in the months when the LMS became British Railways. The new numberplate would be prefixed with a number 4. I would hazard a guess that this photograph was taken between 1947-1950.

My dad,Norman Taylor was a Springs Branch goods driver, died 1953 age 52. DURING WW2 he sometimes had to hide his train in a tunnel during air raids.I sometimes wonder what effect all that smoke had on him.
