But it's not a Wigan service bus, is it, ie Wigan Corporation!
So the fact that it was built in the Wigan boundary by Wiganers isn't good enough for you Garry.
Long time since I walked to work down this road.
Travelled umpteen times on similar buses, 1949, early 50s, from Lower Ince, to Maypole Colliery. Abram, mornings, noons, and nights. Like a fog upstairs, with cig smoke.
It's not a Wigan Corporation bus, it hasn't got the unique green lights either side of the destination board. It was built by Massey brothers for somebody else.
Where was Summersales Colliery? I had never heard of it until this pic appeared. I have asked around amongst other life long Wiganers and have drawn a complete blank with them.
Summersales colliery was near Pony Dick the new( well they are new to me <g>) houses, Merton Road etc. Are built on the site It overlooked Winstanley Park ormore commonly know as 'T long Wall It was a drift mine. Walked through the pit yard thousands of times Happy days.
DPY568, fleet number 32, was supplied to the Tees-side Railless Traction Company, and was withdrawn in 1961.
I hope you submit this pic to a more bus-related site, Phil. I'm sure it would be appreciated by bus enthusiasts, especially from the North-east - and they'd be amused that its first run was to coal mine.
Does anyone know where Southbank Station is?
Many thanks for enlightening me, Ron.
One thing that stood out on all Wigan Corporation buses was the reg, EK and JP. ie C123 CJP or D123 DEK.
South Bank station,Redcar?( Google)
Ron. In the early sixties, I recollect there being a drift mine along Billinge Road, towards Billinge, about half a mile beyond St Mattew's Church, just off the right hand side of the road, They referred this drift mine as Summerscales. When on the Highfield beat, on night shift, I would call in for a chat with the operatives, just inside, to the entrance to the drift. It is so long ago Ron, I may be a bit out with my actual location.
Alan,I now remember those green lights. What a memory jog this is. Thanks for that.
Albert you are on the right place. but it was called SUMMERSALES not SUMMERSCALES Put Sumnmersales into the search box and it will bring up some more pictures of this colliery which are on the site.
I've Googled you now, Phil - and see you've a lot more of such pics... having written the book on the Massey Brothers!
Looks like Phil has got the bus owners. PY was the registration lettering for the Middlesborough district.
