this loco was at Prescott st depot wallgate from at least 1948 to closure of that depot in 1963 ,then it was transferred to springs branch scrapped at ince wagon works sept 64m .it would be workinga wallgate to Liverpool exchange local.
Clear photo, I can now renumber one of my models of this class for my layout. Can anyone tell me what/where the square chimney is that is in the background. Also good to see I don't have to try and make a badly faded ad for GEE's School of Dance. Ron if the original copies of any photos you have of Wallgate Station are bigger than on here is there any chance of emailing them to me. If you haven't already please have a look at my model of Wigan Wallgate in Messageboards / Hobbies / My Model Railway. Any photos in this area always show something new or more detail.
Cheers, Kevan
I'm not certain but I think the only chimney of that size in the locality was the one on the Technical College in Library Street
Could be the chimney at Wigan baths?
Kevan all the photos I have are on the site. I'll have a look if I can fine the originals If I do I'll send you larger scans of them
Ron I would appreciate that if it's possible. The chimney intrigues me though, I have looked on a couple of older aerial shots and yes it could be either of the two from a shape point of view. However, it appears that far to much of the lower part can be seen for it to be either of them, it looks to me as though it is this side of Wallgate. Just to the left in the photo of the chimney in question could be the one inside the tech college as it has a similar 'ornate' top edge to the one in the aerial photo and further to the right could be the baths chimney. But "curioser and curioser" said Alice. Any thoughts
Too far up for the baths. Instinct says: somewhere between Library St and Station Road? Did the old 'Empress' cinema have a chimney?
This chimney was on the outbuildings behind the Last Orders/Dog & Partridge pub - the buildings just behind the parish church gardens wall.
It was taken down some years ago, but the capped stump can still be seen.
If you look closely just beneath the chimney, the stone archway of the entrance to the parish church gardens on the corner of King St West and Crawford St can be made out, and also immediately above the 'W' of Wigan on the station sign, the war memorial can be seen.
Thank's Mick, I don't think I would have picked it there but I felt it was this side of Wallgate. Seems to be an enormous chimney to be attached to the buildings in that particular area. Anyhow it will have to feature on the backdrop of my model railway.
Cheers
Kevan
Long term resident of 27D as already mentioned above but what was unusual about this loco?
It was fitted with a Standard Class 4 Chimney not the usual Stanier type.
