Probably dropped off the back of this bus a few times as it turned into Library Street. No Health and Safety in those days<g>

Anyone recognise picture location. is it Wigan?

Comment by: RON HUNT on 29th July 2013 at 09:09

It isn't Wigan. Photograph probably taken at some vintage transport rally, as there is another old bus behind it.

Comment by: A.W. on 29th July 2013 at 12:27

Anybody know where this bus is kept or based, I would love to see it.

Comment by: Stuart Parkinson on 29th July 2013 at 13:35

The bodywork on this one was built in Leyland by Leyland themselves. I think the picture is taken in Halifax on a Trans-Pennine run. This bus was resident in Halifax for many years and before that in Wigan. I remember it being stored around the back of Mansfield Motors in Woodhouse Lane. That is the Co-op now.

Lizzie down under - used to catch the last bus home from Wigan to Standish and me and the boyfriend used to do some courting at the Lodge Gates. The bus carried on to Pepper Lane, turn round, and when the boyfriend say the bus coming used to cross the road and then go back to Wigan. (I wonder if young men are such gentlemen today?)

Did Wigan Corporation run a bus service to Liverpool???

Comment by: Andy on 29th July 2013 at 15:38

AB yes. Stuart, Massey Brother Body 100%.

Comment by: Margaret Wall on 29th July 2013 at 15:47

Yes A B,Wigan Corp definitely did run a number 320 service to Liverpool. I remember very clearly using the service in February 1966 when my friend Pat and myself went to see our heart-throb P.J. Proby at the Empire Theatre Liverpool. We got on the bus at the bottom of Manley Street, Lower Ince where I lived. Many years later, the 320 bus only went as far as St Helens, instead of all the way to Liverpool.

Comment by: AP on 29th July 2013 at 17:15

I seem to recall that the 320 was a joint service with 'Ribble'. Not sure if LUT were also parties to the joint service.

Comment by: John on 29th July 2013 at 23:36

The bodywork is definitely by Leyland not Massey Bros built Sept 1947 .

Nice story Linda.....in answer to your question.....may be .....one or two gems may be about.....I got one of them....43 years together....cheers!!

The 320 was a regular service from wigan to liverpool well into the 80s, I drove it scores of times, there was one particular bus which got to the merseyside boundary,(Haydock) just before 9.30 where you used to encounter the twirly ticket holders, these were pensioners which merseyside allowed to travel free into Liverpool, this was well before the national scheme, this particular service would reach a couple of stops just before the time allowed, where you would be met with a blank stare and the query are we to early to use this, hence twirly tickets, the full fare to the pool from the boundary for all was only 50p, so not a bad service at all

Comment by: Bodyman on 30th July 2013 at 13:13

Built in Wigan by Massey Bros Ltd...along with many more.

Comment by: Alan H on 30th July 2013 at 14:08

Only seems to be one green light near the destination board. Corporation buses always had two, is this a genuine Wigan bus or not?

Comment by: Garry on 30th July 2013 at 14:55

Look at the reg Alan H. JP Wigan also EK Wigan. It's a Wigan bus Alright.

I've been out of Wigan for a considerable time but I thought Wigan Corpy buses were maroon and white this looks to be red and white, is it my eyes or has there been a change in colour in 1947,

Comment by: Brendell on 30th July 2013 at 20:58

Wigan Corp buses were always maroon and white and LUT were this red and white. The 320 was definitely run by LUT in the 60's. I remember coming out of the Room at the Top and catching the last 320 running in to the Hindley Depot about 11pm. Just mentioned my dad's name "Stan Richards" and I always got dropped off in Spring View.

The bus pictured is a Leyland PD1 Lowbridge No 34 one of a large batch of PD1s ordered by Wigan Corporation around 1947.This was an all Leyland Bus meaning that the chassis AND bodywork was built by Leyland and NOT I REPEAT NOT by Massey Bros.Massey Bros did build bodys for Wigan Corporation especially later on on front entranced PD3s.As for the green lights at the front the near side one was removed when an extra
destination blind was fitted.

Comment by: No 3 Winder on 21st August 2013 at 20:38

The 320 route was run jointly with Lancashire United,Ribble and St Helens Corporation Transport as was quite a few other routes such as the 333 and 343 Wrightington Hospital/Dangerous Corner routes which was joint with Wigan and Ribble.

Comment by: Bazzaw on 21st August 2013 at 21:52

Used to get the 320 from Riding Lane Estate, Stubshaw Cross to Wigan. The No. 1 took the same route to St. Helens, can't remember where the other end of the route was?
