Some kind of on-track machine makes it`s way into the bay platform at Wigan Wallgate in 1985.

What kind of machine/equipment is it?
What did it do?

Looks like a Track Recording Trolley, used to measure the Longitudinal and Cross Level of the track. The data produced would be used in the planning for preventative and reactive maintenance.

Just remembered it was called a Neptune Track Recording Trolley. I think they were made by a Canadian firm Robbel but not sure.

Thank you Mr Guest,
Just had a look on the WWW for what you described & seen some old photos of ones that were based on both the Scottish region & also the Western region.
Perhaps there was one for every region?
Looks like the one for the London Midland region was surveying the Wigan Wallgate area in 1985.

Yes indeed they were Regional machines as opposed to Divisional.

Keith Wasn't there a similar machine called a" Matisa"

Hi Phil correct the Neptune pictured was made by Matisa. Robel did make some On Track Plant before Plasser cornered the market.Old age and poverty is playing tricks with my memory.
