That brings back a few memories, I drove it quite a lot in my time at Melverley street, they were nice vehicles to drive,
Wigan Corperation buses were probably the best kept vehicles anywhere in the country, at the end of their life around Wigan some could be seen back in service with other operators.
I have mentioned this before. Many a service lad, and maybe lassie, knew they were truly home, when they saw a cherry and white Wigan Corporation bus,as they came out of the railway station.
Leyland Atlantean I think was first introduced for Wigan Corporation in 1969, G reg. They were powered by leyland 680 engine and pre-select gearbox. Leyland built at Farrington and seen with a Northern Counties Body..a real piece of Wigan history.
HAVING DRIVEN WIGANS PD 2 /3 S ETC I CAN SAY ALL WIGANS ATLANTEANS AND PANTHERS HAD A DIRECT ACTING AIR OPERATED PNUMO CYCLIC SEMI AUTOMATIC GEARBOX
Leyland Atlantean had pre-select Pneumocyclic gearbox, the Leyland Panther bus had Leyland's Pneumocyclic, or Voith options or even ZF (Friedrichshafen).
leyland motors never built any prodution buses with pre select gear boxes except some pd2 models for london and leeds
