Class 40 No 40079 makes its way slowly along the up goods loop south of Springs Branch with 7L50 Northwich - Stanlow empty tanks on the 18th September 1984. The loco had been "bulled up" a week or so previous for railtour duties.

Did trains really run between Northwich and Stanlow, via Springs Branch? Sounds a bit like the Kings Cross to Edinburgh via Box Tunnel, and still arriving in Edinburgh with a tender FULL of coal!

Still 60 foot lengths of fish-plate connected tracks: nice photo. Grrr but have I got it in before cullie??

Good pic.
Is that Taylors Lane bridge in the background?

Fish plate were longer than 60 foot AP, and it was 1984.

AP I am not certain(its a long time ago) but I seem to recall the loco needed fuel hence the cicuitous route.

OK, sixty six foot. I was not attempting to be precise.

Incidentally, they should really have been called 'Fiche Plates', meaning fastening plates, but the spelling has transposed to the form with which we are familiar.
