What an interesting photo Maxine, thanks for posting.

I do hope someone provides us with the story of this.

This is one of the two ex LNWR tank engines which worked at Abram Colliery. This photograph is believed to be of the second to arrive, an 1870 rebuild of a 2-4-0 tender engine built at Crewe in 1852. (Photograph courtesy of J A Peden Collection, from the book 'The Industrial Railways of the Wigan Coalfield, Part Two - North and East of Wigan' by C H A Townley, F D Smith, and J A Peden)

Thanks Nev. Shame on me: I have that book but had not consulted it! It is a few years now, since I actually read them.

You're welcome Maxine. I'm not suggesting that your photo is taken from the book. It does look like a works photograph taken by the makers, or rebuilders. If yours is an old original print, it may be quite rare.

It is a copy Nev, but don't know where it originally came from. I love the trace of a thumbprint that is on it!

That engine driver must have had big thumbs!!

My great great Grandfather (b.1819), on my maternal side, was working at Crewe in 1852, might just have worked on the original - he was a steam hammer driver.

JohnB that's a real possibility isn't it .... wouldn't it be great if it were recorded somewhere!!
