Peter, that ramp in the center of the tracks to your right, what purpose dose it serve?

They protect the points and locking connections, especially since some connecting rods are parallel to the rails. On loose coupled trains I have heard the occasional clang-like sound when a coupling link touched a plate, as some links were left dangling but I don't know the purpose, I never did any coupling of rolling stock.
