Another gem Peter and a clear day to boot, I added a link on your nightime photo of Coops that will take you to my Wallgate page on "your model railway", Not a lot to see just yet and unfortunately Wigan No.2 Signal-box wont make it on due to space constraints. If you have other photos of this area that might be of interest to me perhaps you could email them rather than get into trouble for featuring too many photos of railways (sorry )

Can anybody tell me what the tall building across the street from uncle joes is also tall chimneys just to the left of it? very intrested..

The building to the left of the picture is the old Wigan Co-operative Warehouse. The Co-op Hall was in the upper part of the building and the bit without a roof was actually the unloading bay for the grocery / fruit and dairy department

As a small boy I remember the Co op delivering milk from Dorning St with horse drawn milk floats, before and during the war.

alba,I remember hearing the the loud rattle of glass bottles as they went through the washing process in the milk depot there.

Dave the photos are all Peter Worthington's, I am meerly trying to gleen as much from them and try to do them and Wigan justice on a model of the area. You are right though about the value to the site and they are invaluable to me personally.

I think its Peter Worthington, Dave, who is posting the photos. However, I agree with you. I think all the photos are gems. And I'm not a railway buff! but I do appreciate them, especially the views that you can see in the background. Absolutely brilliant

KEV: According to the two maps of 1907 and 1908 I have with this area shown, the building you asked about is one of six but looking at the photo and looking at the map, it is just guess work to say exactly where it is. There could be a clue in a symbol on the map near this point, it shows one track from Wallgate box and under the bridge to these sidings and branching into six tracks, two to buffer stops at far side of platform where those two cars are, one on this side of the platform, two run along bottom of the main line bank to buffers, and one in centre runs through a cicle to end at a small building the other side. Don't Know for sure but could it be a turntable?

Peter, there was a 50 foot turntable at Wallgate Station. It is mentioned in the book 'Main Line Railways Around Wigan' by Bob Pixton, on page 91.

The building at the extreme left [top] was THOMAS CHARLSON CO.
LTD[ Corn merchants] which was directly across the road from
the CO-OP in dorning street. That was my first ever job working there when i left school in November 1962 . I
remember next door to CHARLSONS LTD was STARRS printing
works [not on photo]. Where CHARLSONS once stood is now
the BT car park.

The Fowler 0-6-0 4F would probably be the station pilot that day...

liam: The tall chimney to the left of Uncle Joe`s would be Rylands factory that was behind Mesnes Park looking from this angle.
