Do you remember hearing the name Robert McSorley, or is it possible you knew him? He was my Granddad and worked at Spring's Branch for several years but cannot remember when he stopped working there.
Hi Peter,
My grandfather James Prescott was a signalman all his working life. When I was a teenager in the 60's he was in box at Whitley Crossing. He then moved on to Wigan No.2 box
I worked at Wigan from 1960 to 1962, not just at the box but in various departments in the area and met some interesting people. On signal-box telephones there were links to other boxes, and on every shift it provided us with a social environment, so I can say I knew most by their first names. In '62 I progressed to Whelley box as a first time signalman, and was still in touch with the people I spoke with at No.2 box. That's how it was on the railway, one could speak with a person and never see that person.
