Just because these rather fine engineering masterpieces happened to pass through Wigan isn't justification for putting them all on wiganworld is it? What next, great cars that happened to go past Wigan on the M6 or through the town centre or wonderful planes that flew over?

Calm down Joe, these wonderful engines of our passed could have been based at Springs Branch and the drivers and firemen all Wiganers, I for one love to see these great legends of our passed and thanks to Peter for showing them.

Hi Colin, I'll say this as calmly as possible - it's overkill.

I keep looking at planes going over where I live with my camera and 40x lens, but haven't seen any with Wigan registrations yet.

These photos form a unique record of railway history in the heart of Wigan, and have never before been viewed by the public. The intelligent and knowledgable commentary by the photographer is the icing on the cake!

A great set of photos from a byegone age.
I used to go train spotting down the side of Wallgate station in 1960/61. There were dozens of kids down there every saturday afternoon. Happy days.
Keep up the good work, Peter.

Joe, there's plenty room for your photos, so whats the problem? keep em coming Peter.

Joe, if you've got pics of 1960s cars passing through Wigan I'm sure we'd all be delighted to see them. As an infrequent visitor driving a mini through town in that decade it would be wonderful if someone had snapped me.

Stanier 4-6-0, introduced 1934, LMS taper boiler design...Wonderful photograph...These engines survived until August, 1968, the very last days of steam...A fitting tribute to Sir William Stanier who designed them...Many were allocated to 8F, Springs Branch...

The shedcode looks like 15A, Wellingborough: this is a rare visitor; the engine being based on the East Midlands Division...This would have been a "cop" for all the Wigan lads...

YOU KEEP EM COMING!!!
& if anyone has any of the M6 Motorway/or Aircraft/or fine old cars I for one would love to see them also.

Baldylocks: I have a shot of the M6 looking north from the viewing tower of Forton Services, taken about 1964, I also have some of cars/dragsters,I wouldn't be able to upload any of these to W.W. as they are out of area.

Jarvo this loco was allocated to Leicester Midland Shed(15C) at this time,a little further up the line from Wellingborough, but still an unusual visitor to the Wigan area
