The BR Standards became common towards the end of steam and weren't popular with spotters. Not much character, but good workhorses. Apparently, these locos weren't popular with enginemen also. They were allegedly poor steamers...The Crabs, Class6P5F, were the more favoured locos.

Stanier black fives were BRs best engines, do anything passenger and goods, and a dream for the driver and fireman.

i have read at least one book from former locomen who prefer the standard class seventy threes to black fives
