What an incredible photo ! This is one of the AL3 electrics built at Vulcan Foundry in Newton-Le-Willows between 1960 and 1962. 12 type A and 3 type B loco were built, originally numbered E3024-3035 & E3098-3100. They were renumbered to 83001-83015 in the 1970's and eventually scrapped between 1975 and 1993. One (83 012)is preserved by the AC Electric group. See http://www.aclocogroup.co.uk/stock83012.php for more details.

My great grandfather, on my maternal side of the family, worked as a Steam Hammer Driver at the Wagon works in Earlestown from around 1850 to 1880. Would this have been part of these works?

Keith. That would be the Viaduct wagon works.dmsw0
