1963. Whelley Jct. signal-box, photo taken from the south side of the bridge over the road to the rugby pitch, and looking North.

So Whelley Jnc. Signal Box wasn't actually in Whelley. No wonder I couldn't locate it on the old OS map. This photo is actually looking towards Boars Head which is about half a mile beyond the signal box. The Branch line presumably went off to the right towards the old Red Rock Station and on to Adlington. The Photos location is at the top of Wingates Road, off Leyland Mill Lane. The Bridge has long since gone but Wigan Rugby Union Club, off to the right of the photo still thrives. Alan Atherton still goes there Train Spotting on Saturdays(or so he tells his wife ). Will somebody tell him the trains stopped running years ago.

There was also a box between the canal and Whelley station,I think it was called round house sidings.
