Going to platform 4, or 1?

What are the two tall chimneys on the right of the pic!

Comment by: Peter W. on 10th October 2012 at 22:15

It was probably one of the two, and it could have finished at Crewe. If you blow the pic up, one chimney seems to be at Charlsons Corn Mill, the other is further down but don't know the building, and what about the one at almost the top of the pic. it looks like it could be somwhere round Beech Hill.

Peter, the chimney you say looks as if it might be towards Beech Hill appears to be the one which was at Rylands Mill. This cottbn mill overlooked Mesnes Park in the direction of the bandstand ,bowling greens etc. and the WCML was immediately behind and overlooking those. The mill later became part of G.U.S. mail order company.

The chimney could belong to Giant's Hall Colliery.

What is the building with the writing on.

Comment by: Peter W. on 15th October 2012 at 01:15

The building with writing is Thomas Charlson Son & Co.,Ltd.,Corn Millers. The mill was on Dawber Street, which was left on the bend on Dorning St. but after the mill was closed, the land had a vamp up, I think it is now a car park. I used to help a friend of mine on the wagon he drove, laden with provender from that mill.

The chimnies you refer to are at Pagefield Mill, which overlooks Wigan Park, it’s now Wigan College.
The site on which Thomas Charlson Son & Co Ltd corn mill stood is now BT telecoms.
