Another beautiful nostalgic photo from Peter Worthington. Thank you!
Haunting! Thankyou.
Wonderful photograph...I can smell the steam and the fish and chips wafting up from Great George Street...Was there a chippy there? There must have been!
Looking at this again, I have deducted that this is a dawn scene. The sky over the station seems to be brightening; it is on the eastern horizon, so it cannot be sunset.
Yes there was Meehans chippy half way down the street, right facing Johnboys parents grocers shop
I don't remember the time it was taken, but if one looks toward platform 5 at the down line, coming toward the box, there are the two front lights of a non stopper picked up, that went through while the camera was on time exposure, and two front lights, one on each side just above buffer level is a passenger or mail or perishable cargo train.
I deduced that, not deducted it...Silly me...Lovely, lovely photo...
Is that a mill on the right hand side of the photo, the one with the 3large chimneys?
Is it not Westwood Power Station, next to the Cooling Towers?
Irene, that's correct. The twin chimneys belong to Westwood, and the smaller ont to the right belongs to the old Bradford Place power station.
Thanks, Loz. Although I am a Wiganer and this photo is so evocative of my childhood, I have no sense of direction whatsoever! It was just the "look" of the building that made me think it was Westwood.
In connection with freightliner crash at Wigan North West Station in 1984. This photograph fully illustrates how the driver of the second train could be confused. Remember the rear of the freightliner train would be approximately opposite the floodlight in the foreground. Taking it into account this photograph is taken before complete darkness fell.
The picture I refer to is on page 47. wiganworldbryanjohnsonrailways. second paragraph.
