I worked in Alexanders shop in 1968/9 but it was Brooks bros then... (same chain.. United Draperies)

I used to catch the bus here when I worked in Standish, and recall sitting with a busful of passengers one miserable morning of torrential rain, when the conductor got on and said, with a beaming smile, "Good Morning, everybody!", and we all cheered up, and strangers began laughing and chatting; I have never forgotten it. A lesson to be learned, perhaps?

The underground toilets, (the "Ladies" shown just to the right of the bus), have had their fair share of being mentioned here on Wigan World, but deservedly so.....they were a part of our lives, and I wonder if anything of them still exists under the Market Place? I can still hear my Mam's and my own footsteps going down into that echoey place, the clang of the old pre-decimal penny in the slot, and the clang of the heavy toilet door as it closed behind us.
