This is the 1871 Ince Moss Pits Disaster Memorial seen from the reverse side - after I'd discovered that the known graves are grouped around the rear of the Memorial. I have now seen the Cemetery Plan. Their graves, with up to 9 unnamed bodies, have been topped with the graves of others, for whom a memorial stone has been erected. It's one thing to be buried in an unmarked grave, it's another to be buried with someone else's headstone erected atop of you.

This would be down to the burial board of the time, which would have probably included the Vicar of St Mary's or the Vicar of Christ Church.

So well done to Reverend Long for trying to give the men a fitting memorial now.

I would like to get in touch with David Long and also any Ashursts who are also offspring of my great great granddad Zachariah Henry Ashurst who was foreman joiner blown up when instructed to reopen the shaft.

Zachariah was my Great, Great Grandfather. His final home was Cemetery Road, Poldrop House, Lower Ince. He was a foreman Joiner and his grave is A656 in Ince Cemetery. He was 54 when he was killed. His daughter, Ann Ashurst was my Great Grandmother. The graphic report of his injuries at the Coroner's Court do not make pleasant reading. Brave men.....

I am related to Zachariah Ashurst. He was my GG Grandfather. His daughter Jane Ashurst was my G Grandmother (she married John Sanderson) and their daughter Lillian married Matthew Turner and they were my Grandparents.
