Seeing this great photo brings back memories of the donkey stones and all the housewives whitening their front door steps. It also reminds me of Harry Mitchell coming around Higher Ince collecting prato peelings (pillings?) for his pigs. Recycling was the norm in those days!
yeah it looks like flop to me.his name was Philip.

i remember George Hulse he lived on Gidlow Lane and kept his horse in the garden.
most definitely 'Flop' thats all i knew him by, never knew his full name. He used to go horse and carting with my dad John O'Malley but everyone called him Jack. One picture cn bring back so many memories, thankyou.

I used to go to All Saints School with Philips sister in the late 50's early 60's I think her name was Betty they lived in Queen St then they got a new house up Marsh Green. I lived opposite the vine inn at no. 12 chaple st.
Anyone remember a E Forshaw in the 40/50"s woul leant our his carts to collect scrap and then paid for the amount they collected. I know they appeared in Beech Hill.
The last time I saw a rag and bone man was in a poor area of Birmingham in 2002, but the last one I saw in Wigan was about 1993.
