Thomas Wall, an energetic and ambitious man and founder of the Wigan Observer in 1853. His vigorous personality quickly took him into the relms of local government where he became an Alderman of Wigan Town Council and Chairman of the Board of Guardians. When Thomas Wall died, aged 88, in March 1904, he had laid the foundations of a weekly paper that outstripped all other journals published in Wigan, and this a matter of personal pride, the Thomas Wall company remained in control for 113 years.
