A photo taken in 1978 when i was a signalman at douglas bank box, showing the 40 lever all timber L&Y signal box that was situated on the wigan to southport line close to railway street underbridge & on the up side of the line.
this box was built in 1904 by the L&Y & was finally closed by BR after being badly damaged by fire in a vandals arson attack that took place in november 1984 (when the box was switched out overnight).
after the box was abolished a large portion of it was recovered for restoration & preservation in the way we were museum at wigan pier, but the since the museum closed a few years ago it has been dismantled & is in storage at an unknown location & awaiting a new home.
Sorry but i cant reply to any comments as a friend has scanned in & uploaded this shot (& the other photos) on my behalf.
Enjoy the photo(s)
