Anyone else remember those advertising display screens that were at the front behind the drivers cab on the older buses, they automatically turned to a different advert as the bus went along, also the no spitting signs that said a fine would be issued if you spat, they'd make a fortune out of fines these days with the number of folk who can't go for a minute without spitting - an obnoxious habit which is copied from footballers I'm sure.
Cyril, I remember the slide show type adverts which appeared around the late sixties or early seventies - seem to recall that they were short lived. I also remember the 'Spitting Strictly Prohibited' sign 'Penalty Forty Shillings' (I think). Quite an amount for the time!
Yes, that's the one Derek, forty shillings was a lot then, but justice was seen to be done in those days and you couldn't mess about with the bobbies either.
Upstairs on some of the old buses, there were long seats which sat 4 or 5 people, and the aisle was along the side.
I remember those revolving advertising things in the early 60s, also the warning sign about spitting painted on a window as I recall.
I had forgotten about those round steel balls at the end of each seat. I obviously never gave it a thought as a kid but, being reminded about them again after all these years, it now occurs to me that a male standing passenger could have done himself a serious personal injury if the bus had braked heavily and lurched him onto one of them. My eyes are watering at the thought of it! If elf'n'safety had been around at the time, they would have been a definite no-no.
