The stone "Island" near the figure in the background was removed in the early 60s otherwise this view looked the same until the early 80s when the single story buildings on the right were demolished.

Do you know if those buildings were originally called 'The Lodge' at Abbey Lakes, please?

SanFran, the bungalow type building at the right of the photograph was a lodge to the old Abbey Lakes Hotel Pleasure Ground which I believe finished in the 1930s. There were a lot of buildings connected to the pleasure ground in one way or another, nearly all have gone now.

The "guy"walking back along the road is the conductor who hab to walk back so he could see that the corner was free of oncoming traffic then blow his whistle to tell the driver it was safe to reverse on the the pub front and turn the bus round. Not much fun in fog or snow.
