A 1937 Leyland TD4 No.89 JP2027 on route to Pemberton. The Massey bodywork(timber framed) is built to the Leyland design of 1929 and was somewhat out of date.

That's the year I was born - nice to see! It looks like there are curtains on the windows upstairs.

Look how many people there are. The place is thriving. Not like today.

In the 80's and 90's steps were taken to discourage traffic from town centres. The result being nowadays everyone goes to out of town supermarkets and retail parks.

Good Old Woollies in the background, just as I remember it.

Do you think it doesn't seem as busy on the streets these days because people are all in shopping ' malls ' ( what a name ! ) ?

Yes, Helen, and even worse are out-of-town "retail parks".....horrible!

It's a valid point about supermarkets and out of town facilities but, in those days most people(including a lot of women) were employed, unlike today there were no extended shopping hours and no Sunday shopping, which left only Saturday to do anything other than day to day shopping. There are a number of children in this shot so, unless it was school holidays, it's a fair bet it was a Saturday.
