Maybe the driver had just changed the destination ready for the return trip. I remember drivers doing that whilst stopped at Wallgate station.

Carol, you may be right about the driver changing the destination board early for the return trip but, as I remember, incoming buses from Bryn/Ashton usually ran on to Beech Hill.

As I recall, buses from Bryn [Stubshaw Cross] did terminate at Wigan, and only those from Ashton went through to Beech Hill. For interest, through passengers had to re-book in Wigan Town centre.

James McKnight would have had a a fit!
Mr Baschy relented a little under his watch, and permitted subtle advertising on the rear panels only....
