Wigan Album

In the late 1950s ,before the M6 Motorway was constructed,all traffic going north had to travel through Wigan, along the A49. When on duty in Wallgate , the policeman, had to take up traffic control at the junction of Miry Lane, about 4.30 PM , to get the factory girls' from Eckersleys, and Trecherfield Mills, safely across the road. My friend's Mum is on this photo,she is in the middle of the 3 girls on the second row of girls going into work. Her name then was Mary Rourke (married name Gwinnett) and she lived in Lea Street off Miry Lane as a young girl.
