Eckersleys Mill girls on the their way to work early 1950's.
In the late 1950s ,before the M6 Motorway was constructed, all traffic going north had to travel through Wigan, along the A49. When on duty in Wallgate , the policeman, had to take up traffic control at the junction of Miry Lane, about 4.30 PM , to get the factory girls' from Eckersleys, and Trecherfield Mills, safely across the road. If you didn't give the girls' preferential treatment. Boy oh boy didn't you get some stick from them. They were agreat bunch of very jovial LADIES. Ex, Pc 118.
My friend's Mum is on this photo, she is in the middle of the 3 girls on the second row of girls going into work. Her name then was Mary Rourke (married name Gwinnett) and she lived in Lea Street off Miry Lane as a young girl.
