Sacrilege of Wigan's finest town hall.

Two-way traffic on King street? Can anyone remember the year.

Yes Nadro, that was the police station...and what a mess they've left it in now,in fact what a mess all King street is in now.

King Street was never two way for it's whole length.)Well, not in my lifetime, anyway) It was only two way from it's junction with Rodney St. I don't recall it being possible but the bus must have been able to turn right at the bottom of Library St.to get into the lower half of King St. This must have been so , or else there wouldn't be a traffic light looking towards Darlington St.

To think that the Mayors parlour, banqueting hall, council chambers, magistrates courts, police station, fire station & Borough ambulance service, were once housed in that one building. Look at the amount of premises these same services have today..

I remember the bottom end of King Street being two way in the 1960s. I think this picture was taken in the mid 60s. The fire station was on the side of the town hall facing Chapel Lane and the police station faced King Street. The council chambers faced Rodney Street and I remember there being a lay-by and the mayoral car was regularly parked there.
The bus has travelled down Library Street and turned right into Rodney Street and then left on to King Street. In the reverse direction they travelled straight up King Street, right on to Wallgate and left into Market Street where they carried on to Martland MIll (later Evan House Farm).
