I think you'll find that Buckley St is between Gidlow Lane & Swinley..

Pemberton? Buckley Street is nowhere near Pemberton. "The Four Feathers" is advertised: that film was made in 1939, which is presumably when this photgraph was taken. I can't make out the namne of the film showing at the Prince's. "The Day Will Dawn"?

I don't doubt it is Buckley Street. BUT BUCKLEY STREET IS NOT IN PEMBERTON.

The Day Will Dawn was made in 1942.

The photographer is stood in Buckley Street which cuts Barnsley Street in half. Under the bridge is Walkden Avenue where the bus is coming from. In 1935ish, there were no houses at the bottom of Walkden Avenue on the north side other than Buckley Houses hidden behind the north (left) parapit of the bridge.

The bridge carries the West Coast mainline from Wigan NorthWestern to Preston. As with Parsons Walk bridge its was built as a 4 track set of buttresses but only one pair of lines and bridge were built. The Whelley Line was built instead to relieve railtraffic round Wigan.

It is the same bridge today as in the 3rd photo here....

The Wigan Corporation Bus is on its way to Beech Hill as the front destination blind shows. It is No. 3, a Leyland Titan PD1 delivered as a batch of 3 (1,3,& 11) in early 1930 and entered service in March 1930. Registration EK 7435. They were specially ordered for the Beech Hill service.

The pond on the left, refered to by anothervisitor was Buckley St Lodge. The rail tracks in the road came down from Whitley Crossing, via sidings near where the road bridge connects the two halves of Spencer Road. The line ran under the bridge and off to the right, entering the then Pagefield Mill across Rylands Feild where the new Wigan College Annex has now been built. The track ran up incline over the Mill Lodge and into the Mill. Its still there if you can look over the wall to the rear of the College Building.

It's interesting to read the comments about this photo. From memory, in the 1950s, Buckley Houses were through the bridge and on the left. My ancestors lived there in the 1880s - the Woodcocks, Hursts and the Bonds. Thomas Woodcock was an engine winder at the nearby colliery in the 1870s and 1880s. Legend has it that his dog was sent with his "snap" tin with his lunch in from their house to the top of the shaft where he was.
To the left of where the photo is taken was a reservoir. I also remember that there had been sand pits where Queensway now stands.
