Team was based at Pearson and Knowles Ince Moss No 5.
My grandfather, Jack Cheers, is on the extreme left. Date was sometime prior to 1922.

Is that a canary cage between the legs of the man sat at the front?

Stephen, can't think that it would be they were normally kept in an open cage also that looks like some sort of air cylinder on top.

Re Canary Q. All the men are carrying Davey Safety Lamps , which replaced the need for "canaries" as the lamp flame changed colour ,I believe,in the presence of poisonous gas.
At least that is my understanding.My dad was in Mine Rescue but long before my time as I was the "baby" of the Crinigan household.

Canaries were affected by 1x200'th part of afterdamp (CO = carbon monoxide) which would affect man. The cylinder was for resuscitation of the bird
