Where was this? I think it was demolished in the 1930's
Lovely photo of the old school. I don't remember it, of course, but look at the street light on the corner and compare with the previous photo of the modern school.
I was proud to start at this building in 1933rac4g
Was any part of this lovely building preserved?
The Architect was the famous Alfred Waterhouse - who was also responsible for Ince UDC Cemetery and Wigan Public Library. It was begun in 1875, but not finished, and formally opened, until November 3rd 1879.
The more modern Art Deco building now the Thomas Linacre Centre has its architectural merits but nothing can compare with this beautifully designed building.
If you walk past you will see that at least one of those stone gateposts possibly the other shrouded in bushes still remain in place today.
Why on earth would such a magnificent building be demolished - just like that! Perhaps there were so many great buildings it didn’t matter….but one by one they all went the same way. There’s hardly anything of such distinctive structure left in Wigan. The town really stood out at one time now it’s so mediocre.
