Hello Fred. Was this the famous "bottom" Miss Barton, or the equally famous "top" Miss Barton? There were two Miss Bartons at St. Matthew's school at the same time, my wife was in one of their classes in about 1954. I've never seen a photo of either, though i've heard them mantioned many times.

I was at St Matthews until I left in 1945 to go to the Grammar School. The teacher looks very like my teacher in 1945 but that was along time ago an 21 years earlier than this picture.

Hi David, this one is bottom miss Barton. top miss Barton put the fear of God into me.
I remember having to stand behind the blackboard for not getting something wrong. wasn't to bad though Dorothy Fairhurst had to stand with me.

Miss Barton died in 1988 aged 82 so she must have been 60 when this was taken

Please allow me to complete the register: back row - Lynne Yates, Frances Hickling, Jean Hammill; middle row - Paul Edwards, David Green; front row - Lorraine Pugh, Elizabeth Green; the two reprobates at the very fron - Christopher Ratcliffe and Alan Withington.
Apologies for any spelling glitches, but it has been a long time.

I was at Highfield Junior School from about 1949 to 1955 and recall, only too well, the Misses Barton."Bottom" Miss Barton applied a piece of thick cane to your knuckles if you were out of order."Top"Miss Barton only had to look at you to sort you out.And worst of all,was Mr.Elliot, and in my day,the most caned, and it was over the hand, was his son,David Elliot.Happy days!!1!!But they really were.
