L to R: Joe Fairhurst, David (Joe) Payne, Tony Worswick - Rudisheim on the Rhine

Comment by: J. Crawshaw on 24th September 2007 at 17:28

Joe Payne played for Wigan Cricket Club and also had a spell with Orrell RU.

Comment by: Jenny Maude on 25th September 2007 at 11:58

Tony Worswick worked at Pilkingtons in St Helens and BICC in Leigh. He later worked in pubs and clubs. He managed Chaplins Club in Wigan. His last pub was the Abbey Lakes Inn. His dad Eric had previously managed the Stag in Orrell and his grandad Jim had the Bird'ith Hand in Gathurst for many years. Unfortunately he passed away recently in May 2004 of heart attack whilst working on the Costa Del Sol.

Hi Chris - how is David these days?

Comment by: chris on 25th December 2008 at 01:04

Hi Ruby, Sad to say i can't tell you how David is i've not seen him for a long time.

Comment by: Jon Clare on 1st January 2009 at 13:16

I saw Joe Payne in May 2004 at St Williams church Orrell. It was at Tony Worswicks funeral. Joe seemed in good health and was living in Aspul near the Poacher.

Comment by: chris on 28th January 2009 at 15:15

Hi Ruby, Glad to say i'm now in touch with David he came to find me and my sisters at my parents old home sadly they are no longer here but he was still able to find us. Can't wait to meet him again after all these years.

Comment by: allan worthington on 31st January 2009 at 23:19

Sad to hear about Tony Worswick, although I realise it is now a long time ago.I recall that he came into our first XV at a fairly young age age and that he had talent-what a shame!

Comment by: allan worthington on 31st January 2009 at 23:29

Joe,How are you?it has,as they say, been a long time and I am intrigued at this photo. If you can be bothered, please make contact.I have had no real contact with the Wigan area for the past 40 odd years, apart from the odd funeral. For that period of time,I have lived in Edinburgh.

Comment by: allan worthington on 1st February 2009 at 00:16

If Joe Payne is "connected"I would love to hear from him,or indeed, anyone else from that era.

Comment by: chris on 10th February 2009 at 21:30

Hi Ruby,
Had a great afternoon met up with David never stopped talking you wouldn't believe we hadn't seen each other for about 35 years don't know who talked the most me or my sisters. I did ask him who Ruby was he said he had no idea and could you let him know.

Comment by: Ruby on 13th February 2009 at 11:52

Hi Chris glad you and David have reunited. I only know David as a pal of Tony Worswick from many years ago. Tony's dad Eric was landlord of the Stag Inn at Orrell. David used to call. He probably will not remember me. Good luck.

Comment by: Frank Healy on 20th February 2009 at 14:25

Hi Jenny Maude. Just in case you read the comments section again, do you happen to know David's grandmother's first name (i.e grandfather Jim's wife)? I'm asking this question because I've Worswick ancestry myself; it's possible that we were related (3rd cousins)

Comment by: Frank Healy on 20th February 2009 at 14:37

Whoops! I've put David instead of Tony.

Comment by: J. Crawshaw on 20th February 2009 at 15:44

Frank, if it helps I think his mothers maiden name was Boylan. Tony's cousin is Carol Boylan who went to the Convent. I don't know the maiden name of Jem Wrswicks wife but I'll ask if I bump into any of Tony's relative.

Comment by: Frank Healy on 20th February 2009 at 16:13

Comment by: Steven McDonnell on 28th February 2010 at 02:11

Hi all,
Hopefully soemone will be able to help me.
I was a good friend of Tonys (Prob one of the best friends I'll ever have) and only learned of his death when I returned from Australia. I had lost touch with him since he and Liesel (His partner since he split from Viv) had come to visit me in about 1998.

Despite having worked with him for a number of years I am afraid I cannot remember Leisels surname. If anyone has any information on this (Or better still conact detials) I would love to make contact with her again..
Thanks - Steve McDonnell

Comment by: Rob Hood on 28th February 2010 at 11:57

Stevie your best bet is to track down one of Tony's cousins. Either Margo or Carol Boylan. Failing that Joe Fairhurst knew him well. However, I dont know how to contact these people.
Liesels name is Derbyshire and she has a sister Beverley who ran the Abbey Lakes whilst Tony was in Spain. I think Beverley ran a pub in Darwen and went back to that location. Chances are Bev still works in a pub in Darwen.
There is also a well known barmaid called Gladys who worked for Tony in the Abbey Lakes. Gladys is from Rainford and had quite a following at the Abbey Lakes. The may know in the Abbey Lakes pub where Gladys is now.
These gentlemen, followers of Gladys, I thnk relocated to the Delph Tavern at Tontine, Orrell.
These gents are late afternoon drinkers. Ask for Norman (ex singer Vacqueros rock group) or Gerry, a good friend of Gladys. Norman and Gerry will know where to find Gladys. Gladys may know where Beverley or Liesel live. Beverley will certainly know where Leisel lives.
Get you Sherlock Holmes cap on and start sleuthing. If you find anything out about Beverley or Liesel please post it here. Good hunting.

Thanks Rob, I didnt expect to get such good information so quickly. I will certainly post back if I make any progress

Regards, Steve

Comment by: Rob Hood on 7th March 2010 at 14:32

Stevie. The guys names you should look up at the Delph tavern are Norman Liptrop and Gerry Whalley.

Comment by: Rob Hood on 12th April 2010 at 21:26

Steven McDonnell, the lady you want to ask i.e. Gladys, you will discover behind the bar at Houghwood Golf Club, Billinge. You will probably find Gerry Whalley as well. Elementary my dear McDonnell.

Comment by: Rob Hood on 24th April 2010 at 20:44

Steven McDonnell: Liesel has married. Not a clue who! You will need to ask Margot, Tony's cousin. Margot lives somewhere in Orrell so she shouldn’t be hard to find. She's married to a guy named Ritchie who plays guitar for local rock group, Alligator Joe. Ritchie I understand has a guitar repair business at Wigan Pier. Don’t bother with Norman Liptrop who I understand has passed on, although I believe Gerry Whalley is still extant. As for Liesel's sister, Beverley,a lady of some renown - not much of a clue - but you could start by trawling the pubs in Darwen. That's all she wrote Steve - no mas!

Comment by: carole highton (boylan) on 28th December 2010 at 23:55

Hi all, I will be back in uk mid february, if any of my old friends, acquaintances want to catch up. post message on here.

Comment by: Rob Hood on 1st January 2011 at 16:51

Carole, what was Tony's grandmas maiden name, Jim Worswick's wife. Frank Healy above thinks he is related.
By the way have you seen the pics of Tony working in Wigan Warriors bar in Spain. Its on the Wiganers At Work page.

Comment by: carole highton on 3rd February 2011 at 23:57

Hi Rob,nice to know that u remember Tony so fondly. We all miss him so much (he was one of lifes chsracters) and we all loved him. His paternal grandparents were James Anthony Worswick and Elizabeth (Betty) Lowe. His maternal grandparents were James Parkinson and Margaret (Maggie) Power. The Lowes were from Pemberton, I think Smethurst Lane. Do u remember me and have we met, in the past? remind me if we have please. I live between Spain and England and I rarely come to Wigan, only to see old friends and relatives especially Margo, who lives in Orrell. Anyway if any of Tonys old friends want to contact me, I will check on here and contact them. Ta ta 4 now, Carole

Comment by: Frank Healy on 6th February 2011 at 16:14

Hi Carole, thanks for the info. Tony's paternal grandparents would have to have been James Worswick and Mary Atherton (both first cousins to my grandmother Mabel Worswick Healy) for us to have been 3rd cousins.

Comment by: Rob Hood on 16th February 2011 at 17:34

Carole, do you recall Gladys who worked for Tony at the Abbey lakes.
I was talking to her in Huff Wood Golf Club where she now works.
Gladys was asking about Liesel. I'm sure Margot once told me liesel had now married and lives in Spain. Is this correct?
Do you know what happened to Liesels's sister Bev?

Comment by: carole highton (boylan) on 19th February 2011 at 20:32

Hi Rob, Leisel is married to a guy named Tony and has a son called Archie. They live in Manchester, and she rarely comes to Wigan. As far as I know she is very happy. Have we met in the long distant past, if so, please jog my memory. I did know and meet a lot of Tonys friends, as we were very close and both the same age; we went to st johns infants and junior school together. I live between Spain and Croston, but at the present I am in Croston for a short while. |I love nostalgia and catching up with long lost friends. Thanks to all who have commented on this site, for the memories. x

Who is Frank Healy? Well he's a former Wigan Grammar boy. You can probably work out which one he is on the photo submitted by Jim Khana, previous page, Wigan Grammar 1958, Item #: 7128, by reading the comments underneath.

Comment by: Amanda Marsh on 12th May 2011 at 11:38

Tony was my dad. I have the original of this photo - he didn't change much! I miss him alot but I have a daughter who looks the spitting image of him - much to the annoyance of my mum! Lost contact with Carol etc so would love to hear from them. I am married in Stockport with my two children Maisie and Thomas. Not heard from Liesel either but still see Viv (mum) every weekend - she has babysitting duties!

Comment by: carole highton (boylan) on 3rd June 2011 at 23:12
