I seem to recall a couple of the names here as I was at St Cuthberts during this time. My teacher was Mr. McArdle. I then went to St.Peters briefly, before returning to Rochdale.

Other names I recall from this time include; Peter Sutton, Paul Peet, John Funk and Dennis Liptrot.

Remember Mr Murphy very well , He was a good headmaster and well loved by all. fond memories of the man, and he was very kind. He is still alive, but now in a nursing home.

I remember Mary and Sheila and also Mrs Lowe who was a bit handy with her caning technique ! Would love to have a reunion !

Comment by: Mary Lamb (nee Catterall) on 10th January 2014 at 22:15

I remember you well, Brendan. Somehow, I don't think Miss Lowe's caning technique would be allowed these days!

It is possible that the lad next to the end (left) top row is me.

Comment by: Mary Lamb on 1st September 2014 at 20:31

I thought the boy on the top row, left, next to the end, was David Morris.

You could be right Mary. But I do have an abiding memory from that time of us standing at the top in our stockinged feet and slipping along the side worktops. We were not allowed to wear shoes on the tops. Also, I did look very much like that lad when I used to have red hair in those days.

I see what you mean, now, Pete. In fact, I think David Morris is right in the middle, to the left of Sheila Oliver. (Her left.) Christine, you've come up with names I'd completely forgotten. All very interesting!

I seem to recollect that Mr Mc Ardle went on holiday in 1965 to one of the Carolinas in the USA. I can't remember if it was North Carolina or South Carolina. But he told all his class at the time, me included, about his trip. A holiday like that, was so unusual at that time.

Mr Brendan Murphy M.B.E. passed away last week at the age of 96. His funeral was on Friday 12 August at St Mary's church, Standishgate, Wigan and he was interred at Our Lady and All Saints church, Lancaster Lane, Parbold.
